Hugh Durrant-Whyte is Research Director of the ARC Centre of Excellence for Autonomous Systems, based at University of Sydney. His research work focuses on autonomous vehicle navigation and decentralized data fusion methods. His work in applications includes automation in cargo handling, surface and underground mining, defense, unmanned flight vehicles and autonomous sub-sea vehicles. Previously, he was Senior Lecturer in Engineering Science, the University of Oxford, U.K. and a Fellow of Oriel College Oxford. He was also Professor of Mechatronic Engineering at the Department of Aerospace, Mechanical and Mechatronic Engineering, the University of Sydney, Australia, where he led the Australian Centre for Field Robotics (ACFR), a Commonwealth Key Centre of Teaching and Research. He has published approximately 300 papers in these areas, supervised 47 PhD students and received numerous awards for both his research and commercialization activities.
